The Federal Government, of Nigeria today
Wednesday 11th of August 2021 has stated that Twitter ban in Nigeria will soon
be lifted. It is recalled that the Federal Government of Nigerian suspended
Twitter operation in Nigeria on 5 June 2021 from operating in Nigeria after
Twitter deleted tweets made by the Nigeria President and commander of her armed
forces, President Muhammadu Buhari.
Several international bodies condemned the
ban however following several consultations and engagements between Twitter and
Nigeria Government, Nigeria minister of information Alhaji Lai Mohammed
disclosed that the end for amicable resolution is very much in sight and he
thanked Nigerians for their patience.
Alhaji Mohammed stated that some of the
conditions made by the Federal Government for Twitter operations to resume in
Nigeria includes that Twitter should establish a legal presence in the country
and register as a Nigerian company with an address. Another condition is that
Twitter should also have a Country Representative that will serve as a liaison
and must register with relevant regulatory agencies including the NCC. The
government is also demanding that Twitter must commit itself to the Federal
Inland Revenue Service, FIRS. The government is also proposing an Ombudsman
between Twitter and Nigeria. The minister of information affirmed that Twitter
has shown a lot of flexibility.
